More ways to help take back the House

1) Phone Bank on behalf of Rob Quist for Congress

Voters in Montana and across the country are fired up for the upcoming special election on May 25.

Republicans are EXTREMELY nervous about this race. Late last week, the Congressional Leadership Fund -- a super PAC aligned with House Speaker Paul Ryan -- announced a massive $800,000 ad buy to defeat Quist. And that's on top of the $1.2 million the National Republican Congressional Committee plans to spend in MT between now and Election Day.

We can make a difference and help flip this congressional seat!

RSVP here to phone bank
Thursday, May 4th
5 - 8 PM
Brentwood/WLA location
We will send you the address and directions.
Bring a phone AND computer or tablet.

If you can't attend on Thursday and want to phone from home contact wlaphonebank@gmail.com for further instructions.

More information on the campaign: Rob Quist for Montana Information and Action Items

Grassroots Fundraising for Rob Quist for Montana

The Quist campaign is powered by the regular people of Montana who want to have a leader in Congress who will stand up for Montana values. We can support this effort by donating ourselves and creating local fundraisers in our communities.

THINK CREATIVELY – host a wine and cheese event in your home and ask everyone to donate an amount of their choosing ... ask a group of friends to go out for drinks and donate the equivalent of a collective round of drinks to the campaign ... have a BBQ and ask everyone to donate.  (With enough notice we can also help you to get campaign posters, stickers or other material to share at your event.)

Here is the link you can share to collect donation:
Action Together Network: Support Rob Quist for Montana!
https://act.myngp.com/Forms/-79560794079614

Let's show the people of Montana that we support their desire to have a quality candidate represent their needs in Washington!

Questions? wlaphonebank@gmail.com.

2) What's next in the Jon Ossoff for Congress Campaign

Help Recruit Volunteers to Canvass in State

The campaign is looking for volunteers who want to travel to Georgia to put boots on the ground and knock on doors: Face-to-face canvassing is the best way to convince voters to Get Out And Vote for an election! Make it a road trip and carpool with a group of friends....

Complete this form to volunteer. The campaign will contact you with details of where to go and training will be provided to you on site in Georgia (along with lodging) -- no experience needed.
Be part of this historic campaign and true grassroots movement.

For those who need to stay home, phone banking will continue in mid-May.

For more information on the campaign, check out ATN's

Code Blue Nation Supports Laurie Warner's Special Election

On February 14 there will be a special election in
Minnesota House District 32b.
Laurie Warner is a progressive, labor-endorsed Democrat
trying to win this rural district in Chisago County.

This seat opened because former State Rep. Bob Barrett was found to live outside of the district he represented. The Minnesota Supreme Court ruled that a special election would be needed to fill the seat.

Warner is now running against hardline conservative Anne Neu, former chairwoman of the House Republican Campaign Committee.

THIS ELECTION IS WINNABLE. The district was represented by a Democrat just 8 years ago and this special election is an excellent opportunity to
flip it back to BLUE. There are 76 Republicans and 57 Democrats in the state house with 1 seat unassigned.
This is the seat we are going to win with your help.

Our Code Blue liaison to the campaign is Tamara Levenson who can be reached at codebluewla@gmail.com

Potluck Thank-You Party
Saturday, Nov. 12, 6 PM
Westside Democratic HQ
1627 Montana Ave., Santa Monica
* No RSVP needed *

To all our volunteers and supporters:

The staff and volunteers at the Westside Democratic HQ became a family. We spent hours together, putting our hearts and souls into the campaign. We can’t thank you all enough for the time, commitment, and dedication you gave.

Although we are all deeply saddened by the results of the Presidential election, we can be proud that together we became the number #1 GOTV staging location in California, and likely one of the top performing campaign offices in the country. Our efforts in Nevada definitely paid off, as Hillary decisively won that state and Catherine Cortez Masto was elected to the U.S. Senate -- the first Latina Senator....

But we never had a chance to say goodbye to each other, to swap phone numbers, and to plan for the future. So we've decided to hold a Potluck Thank-You Party for our volunteers this Saturday, at HQ, starting at 6 pm. We invite all of you to come. Bring food, soft drinks, wine or beer.

As to the future, we have decided to stop agonizing and start organizing for the midterms and to shine a light on the most progressive Democratic platform in years. We will not slink into the background. We will do whatever it takes to protect our rights, our values, and our country.

Hope to see you all there.

Melissa Grant
President, Pacific Palisades Democratic Club

Speaker Series w/Derek Cressman, author of
The High Price of "Free" Speech and the Selling of Democracy

Wed., 4/20/16
Palisades Public Library, 861 Alma Real Dr.

-Full house!-

The audience asked many thoughtful questions after the presentation.... Our thanks to Derek Cressman, and to all who came to hear him!

The Palisadian Post's reporter published a great write-up on the event
in the 4/28/16 edition of the Post.

About the book:
Americans know that the corrupting influence of special interest money is destroying our democratic process. And now that the Citizens United decision has thrown out campaign spending limits as abridgments of free speech, they want to know what they can do about it. Derek Cressman gives us the tools, both intellectual and tactical, to fight back.

Every day we read about or view another tragedy caused by gun violence.  The statistics are staggering:
"Women are 500% more likely to be killed if their abuser has a gun"
"Millions of guns are sold without background checks each year"
"Every 16 hours a woman is shot and killed by her husband or boyfriend"
46% fewer women are shot to death by intimate partners in states with background checks
80 Americans are shot and killed every day
States with waiting periods had 51% fewer gun suicides

Making a Killing: Guns, Greed, and The NRA tells the stories of how guns, and the billions made off of them, affect the lives of everyday Americans. It features personal stories from people across the country who have been affected by gun violence, including survivors and victims' families. The film exposes how the powerful gun companies and the NRA are resisting responsible legislation for the sake of profit - and thereby putting people in danger.
The film looks into gun tragedies that include unintentional shootings, domestic violence, suicides, mass shootings and trafficking - and what we can do to put an end to this profit-driven crisis.

Watch the trailer here

After the film, Producer and Filmmaker Robert Greenwald will lead a Q&A and give us Action Items to guide us in ways we can be effective in changing the gun laws.

=

Get your questions answered. Find out where you can find out more. Come hear our panelists give an overview of where the ACA is now, what its impacts are, and who qualifies for coverage, including small businesses, seniors and young people.

In 2010, California was the first state in the nation to enact legislation to implement the provisions of the federal Affordable Care Act (aka "ObamaCare") by creating a health care marketplace - Covered California.

While the national enrollment site, HealthCare.Gov, got off to a rocky start, our state's program hit the ground running, and it encourages everyone that is qualified to sign up to do so.

The Affordable Care Act enrollment in health plans through Covered California began on October 1, 2013 and will continue until March 31, 2014.

FROM PDSMM, the Progressive Democrats of the Santa Monica Mountains:

Fracking is here in Los Angeles.  Residents in the Baldwin Hills area know - they can smell it.  In the two years since Gasland came out fracking has increased!  And there is NO REGULATION!  In New York"s beautiful Catskill Mountains Sean and Yoko Lennon are fighting to preserve the land.  Now near Santa Barbara and Route 101 fracking is going to begin.  No one is safe who lives near government land as it is being leased for fracking!  This is OUR LAND!  OUR AIR! OUR WATER! Come to the Topanga Community House, the site of so many wonderful forums.  Learn the truth and what you can do!  After the film there will be a forum. Legislation is pending but is it not strong enough.  We need to ban this dangerous practice.  Our water table is threatened.  Methane gas is released exacerbating global warming.  Panel members to be announced.  Here the the Guardian review of the film and the trailer.  Even if you have seen it - come and see it again with your friends and contribute to solutions.  Please post, forward, get the word out!  Thank you!  See you on the 23rd.

Here is the address:  Topanga Community House
                                   1440 Topanga Canyon Boulevard
                                   Topanga, CA 90290
Bring a dessert to share!  Coffee, tea and water will be provided.  $5 donation requested.  No one turned away for lack of funds!

FOLLOW THE MONEY... What we in California can do to lead the way for change... and we're not talking Loose Change here...
Thursday, June 14, 7:00 P.M.
St. Bede's Episcopal Church (Sanctuary)
3590 Grand View Blvd., Mar Vista 90066

It's scary out there.  Spending for the Wisconsin recall election by candidates and independent groups is estimated to be between 75 and 80 MILLION DOLLARS.  Republican Super PACs are pouring money into races all over the country and winning; progressives are losing; and Romney will spend 1 BILLION DOLLARS to defeat Obama.  And, of course, Obama will have to raise the same if he is to win.

I thought we were recovering from a recession.  If there is so much disposable money out there why isn't it being spent to help the economy? To build more roads, to put people to work? Why don't we have Single Payer Health Care?  Why are people losing their homes?  And what can we do to about it?

We can identify the moneybags, the biggest funders of the propositions on the ballots.  And begin to move to amend the Constitution to overturn Citizens United, the Supreme Court's "Corporations as People" decision.

THE DISCLOSE ACT & MOVE TO AMEND

JOIN US ON THURSDAY, JUNE 14, 2012 ~ 7:00 PM
AND HEAR FROM OUR PANEL OF GRASSROOTS EXPERTS

TRENT LANGE - California Clean Money Campaign and the CA Disclose Act
MARY BETH FIELDER - Move To Amend and United Republic
DANIEL TAMM - Move to Amend

Trent Lange    Mary Beth Fielder     Daniel Tamm

Our Senior Advocate Committee Chair, Frances Pin, writes:

"There are so many things happening now in our country that are serious, in fact detrimental, that it  becomes more infuriating to also listen to the blatant lies the Republican presidential candidate is putting out. This is being done with the help of the media and the money it takes to pay for it all.  What has unleashed this tempest is the Supreme Court in issuing a decision under the name forever to be remembered as "Citizens United", which gives untold power to corporations to spend infinite amounts of money towards political candidates without legally having to divulge where the money is coming from.

What's going on now?  What can we do about it?  It's time for us to find out more from the grassroots organizations working on overturning the decision of the Supreme Court.  How can we disclose donors to political campaigns so that we could find other ways to combat them?  Is the Federal Elections Commission working for the people or for the corporations?"

PLEASE JOIN US AS WE "FOLLOW THE MONEY" IN THE POLITICAL PROCESS
When:  Thursday, June 14, 2012 7:00 p.m. (door open 6:45 p.m.)

Where:  St. Bede's Church @ 3590 Grand View Blvd., Mar Vista 90066 (corner of Grand View & Charnock, north of Venice Blvd.)
Free lot and street parking

Program Panel:  Trent Lange (Clean Money Campaign), Mary Beth Fielder (United Republic & Move to Amend), Daniel Tamm (Move to Amend)

OCT. 24, 2011      2-5 PM   OCCUPY LA CITY HALL     Attend and hopefully speak at the LA City Council Budget and Finance Committee during this time so that the 2.6 or 2.7 acres promised as a soccer field or parkland can be salvaged if 4 Korean garment companies develop the rest of the 13-14 acre old South Central Farm site at 41st and Alameda.  The hearing is in Room 1010.  (The South Central Farmers website has not been updated in regards to this hearing, but the website is     www.southcentralfarmers.com

OCT. 25th, 2011      9:30 AM onward    Attend / speak at the LA County Board of Supervisors meeting on Temple St. in downtown L.A. to halt the huge Newhall Ranch development in the most sensitive area of the free-flowing Santa Clara River near Santa Clarita.  Building housing for 70,000 people including in the Santa Clara River floodplain will result in deteriorating habitat for many species, flooding of many housing units, traffic crunches along the important Hwy. 5 thoroughfare, and water is not available for this project unless they claim water which is being diverted to current residents since a couple wells had to be closed due to a perchlorate plume in the vicinity.  Write the Bd. of Supes as well to oppose the Newhall Ranch development.  Though not updated for hearing, but see www.scope.org

We can’t let another millionaire Republican try to buy his way into office.  Hahn’s Tea Party Republican oppenent Craig Huey spent more than $500,000 to purchase second place in the Primary.  We must spread the word voter-to-voter about just how dangerous another Tea Party extremist in Congress would be.

Our path to retaking the House in 2012 starts today in CD 36 – please join us in the fight!
